OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, April 12, 2026 — Open Government Initiative, Incorporated (OGII), today emphasized the importance of Oklahoma’s initiative petition process as a critical “people’s veto”; a constitutional tool that allows citizens to directly challenge decisions made by the Legislature and restore balance in state government.
Oklahoma’s initiative and referendum process gives voters the authority to propose laws, amend the state constitution, and, most importantly, refer legislation passed by lawmakers to a public vote before it takes effect. This citizen-driven veto power ensures that when legislative leadership blocks debate or advances policies without broad support, the people retain the final say.
“Too often, decisions are concentrated in a small group of legislative leaders,” said Charles Key, Chairman of OGII. “The initiative petition process gives citizens the power to veto those decisions and hold government accountable.”
Under Oklahoma’s Constitution, citizens can:
- Refer legislation passed by the Legislature to a vote of the people (the citizen veto)
- Propose new state laws through statutory initiative petitions
- Amend the Oklahoma Constitution through constitutional initiative petitions
OGII is working to educate Oklahomans about this veto authority and encourage civic participation. Supporters say the process is essential when elected representatives are unable or unwilling to bring important issues forward for a vote.
“The people’s veto is not just a procedural tool; it’s a safeguard for our state,” Charles Key added. “When citizens organize, gather signatures, and place an issue on the ballot, they are exercising the highest form of self-government.”
OGII believes protecting and strengthening the initiative petition process will ensure that political power remains with the people of Oklahoma, not concentrated among leadership offices, special interests, or large donors.
